Spend $25 on the 25th. It's that simple.
And that's what The Sedalia Democrat is asking our readers to do. Spend $25 on November 25 and help our local economy. Between now and then, The Sedalia Democrat will do a series of stories and reminders to help you anticipate what to spend on.
We're excited about what this could mean to our local economy - and our outlook. We take the role our newspaper plays in the community seriously and have seen the power of The Sedalia Democrat work in many areas over the years. The health of our local economy is one of the more pressing issues. As a business in this community, we are pleased to do our part to jump start our spending.
A small purchase on a single day might seem insignificant in the face of the global economic forces wreaking havoc in your life and the lives of family members and neighbors.
But if every adult in Pettis County spent an extra $25 with local retailers on November 25, we would immediately have a collective economic impact of more than $3 million. And a good deal of that spending comes right back to us in the form of paychecks for local workers and community amenities and services funded by local sales tax revenue.
That won't eliminate our financial woes, but don't underestimate your buying power. Consumer spending accounts for about 70 percent of the overall economy. And spent wisely, our collective dollars have the power to make profound changes in our lives and will help turn our local economy around.
This is a great opportunity for everyone to do something they can feel good about. Your $25 will help support and strengthen local businesses and help maintain local jobs.
The idea is to spend $25 that you wouldn't otherwise spend on November 25 and to spend it in Pettis County.
It could be a lunch date, a gift for a loved one, an evening of entertainment, a deluxe car wash or even a donation to a local charity. You supply the funds and local businesses will do the rest.
Numerous businesses and community organizations are anticipated to join The Sedalia Democrat in promoting this effort to help the economy, and in the same spirit of cooperation we encourage everyone who can spare an extra $25 on November 25 to take part. Thanks, too, to our partners in this endeavor for the support they are showing for local businesses.
Frugality, sacrifice, austerity ... not a thing wrong with any of them. Still, "$25 on the 25th" will let us explore other options, if only for a day. Feel free to live a little - and help our local businesses a lot.
